What are the benefits of using a standing desk?



There are several benefits of using a standing desk, as opposed to sitting all day long. However, a standing desk isn’t the end all be all solution if you’re feeling discomfort while working. There are a multitude of factors that come into play when dealing with ergonomics, so expecting a standing desk to be able to solve all your problems might end up causing disappointment. That being said, however, a standing desk can help reduce a lot of the discomfort and pain caused by a too sedentary lifestyle. Especially great are the height adjustable variations of a standing desks, as they can be raised and lowered throughout your day in order to better accommodate your needs.

These are some of the most noted benefits of using a (height adjustable) standing desk while working:

Increased Productivity  – being on your feet naturally makes you more alert and less prone to laziness. Have you ever dozed off while standing? How about while sitting?

Decreased Neck and Back Pains – this point is highly personal – if you’re currently not experiencing any pain from sitting, chances are that standing won’t make any difference in that regard. However, for those whose backs and necks are tense all day from sitting hunched over their desks – having a standing desk that can be raised and lowered throughout the day definitely helps in loosening up the sore muscles. It also makes it much easier to move around leading me to point three:

Promotes health and movement being already on your feet makes it a lot easier to take a break and walk around for a few minutes every hour throughout the day. Not only does this help loosen up tension in your body, it also helps you burn a few calories if you’re looking to lose weight.

Freedom standing while working makes you feel a lot more free. I’ve already mentioned the benefits of being able to easily walk around above, so instead I’ll go on to talk about the freedom of choice  in whether you want to sit or stand. If you have a heigh adjustable standing desk, then you have the option to sit down the moment you start feeling tired, and stand back up again when you want to be more productive or if you fear you’re on the verge of dozing off.

Overall, there are many health benefits of standing while working, as long as you don’t force yourself to stand the entire day. If your budget doesn’t allow for a height adjustable desk right now, then purchasing a standing desk converter might be another option. This device looks like a small table, which you then place on top of your regular (sitting) desk, successfully raising the surface height and converting the desk into a standing desk.
Alternatively, you can also consider getting a tall drafting chair to use with your standing desk, if adjusting the height isn’t possible.
P.s. Don’t forget to get a good anti fatigue floor mat if you’re planning on standing for long periods of time.
